Unlocking the Frontier - November 29, 1760 Closer view
Commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the Surrender of Fort Detroit to Rogers' Rangers.
The original Painting is commissioned by the Army War College class of 2010 that will have their own s/n edition with the college emblem and some desktop prints.
In late 1760's the French and Indian war came to a close as the French surrendered Montreal and all of their other frontier posts to the British. Major Robert Rogers, with a detachment of his famed Rangers and a company of the Royal American Regiment, were charged with supervising the crown jewel of these posts - Detroit. "The French garrison laid down their arms, English colors were hoisted and the French taken down, at which time about 700 Indians who were observing all this gave a huge and merry shout." The French garrison then left Detroit with an escort of rangers to be taken to Pittsburgh and, eventually to Europe. This is the moment shown in the painting, an event full of eighteenth century courtesy worthy of any European palace, but taking place on the North American frontier. For the occasion, the troops would have been in their best regulation dress: the French wearing their gray-white and blue uniforms, the rangers in green and the soldiers of the 60th in red coats.

Crockett’s Western Battalion, Virginia State Forces 1780-1781 Closer view
OWN AN ORIGINAL TROIANI PAINTING! You can now view available oils and watercolors on our Place An Order page or just call for details.
In October 1779, the Virginia State Assembly enacted legislation to raise a "Western Battalion" of state regular troops to protect her frontier and keep open the supply and communication lines between the state regular and militia forces far to the west in the Ohio Valley (including George Rogers Clark's Illinois Regiment, raised two years earlier). Ordered to join Greene's Southern Army in February 1781. The regiment had already begun its march into the Carolinas when it was diverted westward, joining Clark's forces then assembling at Yohogania Court House (now West Virginia) for a proposed expedition to take British-held Detroit on 23 May; it was not until August that most of the battalion, along with the other volunteers and regulars in Clark's little army, took the field.

UNLOCKING THE FRONTIER September 29th, 1760 **Commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the Surrender of Fort Detroit to Rogers' Rangers.** This print was commissioned by the US Army War College class of 2010.
In early September 1760, three British armies coming from the east, the west and the south met outside the walls of Montreal. Within the city were the remains of the French regular troops under the command Major General Levis and Governor General Vaudreuil. The Canadian Militia, which had recently mustered up to one man out of five souls in the colony - the highest conscription rate recorded anywhere, had collapsed. Facing overwhelming odds, shortages and devastation on a vast scale, the French commanders had little choice other than surrender. On September 8, 1760 British troops entered the city while the capitulation was signed, which ended the campaigns in Canada. ....But there was one that was truly a frontier metropolis: Detroit.

GICLEE CANVAS PRINTS
Historical Art Prints offers canvas giclees on many editions (and some paper on earlier editions). These canvas prints are varnished and on wooden stretchers. Most edition sizes are under 25 and each is signed by Mr. Troiani and numbered. There is no white margin or titles, so that when framed they look a lot like the original artwork. The image sizes we do for these are a good bit larger then the regular S/N edition so the total effect is quite impressive.
The giclee (pronounced: jhee clay) printing process enables print makers to reproduce fine art in limited editions with an accuracy and cost effectiveness unattainable in the past. In fact when produced by a professional print maker, giclees can so closely match the original that it may be difficult to tell that you are looking at a reproduction. Advances in digital imaging gave birth to the giclee in the late 1980s. Since then it has become one of the most popular forms of fine art reproductions and has been purchased by many collectors, museums and galleries.
The ability to print directly on to archival fine art papers and canvas with fade resistant inks is another strength of the giclee. The paper and canvas reproductions we offer are rated with a longevity of over 60 years before any noticeable fading may occur. Giclees are produced with the aid of high resolution, wide color gamut printers utilizing high-end inkjet technology.
The artist's input and ultimate approval is an integral part of our process, assuring the highest fidelity print possible.
